Australian Mist Cat Breed

This affectionate cat has a beautiful coat and a steady temperament that makes it an excellent pet for anyone.

The first pedigree cat to be developed in Australia, this breed was created from crosses between Burmese, Abyssinian, and Australian domestic shorthair cats. Formerly known as the Spotted Mist, it comes in a range of attractive spotted and marbled patterns and colors, all enhanced by ticking that produces a delicate “misted” effect. It can take up to two years for the full coat color to develop.

The Australian Mist is extremely popular in its native country and has earned a reputation as a particularly easy pet to keep. The breed is known for being healthy and eventempered.

It has a loving nature, lives happily indoors, and is equally suitable as a playmate for children or a faithful companion for the less active owner. Its striking appearance and sociable nature have also helped to win the Australian Mist increasing popularity in the show ring.

Creating a cat

It took breeder Dr. Truda Straede nine years to create the Australian Mist and achieve official registration for her new cat. Dr. Straede combined the qualities of the cat breeds she loved best.

For the foundation cats she chose Burmese to provide beautiful muted colors and an easy-going nature; Abyssinians, for a tick-marked coat and bright personality; and domestic shorthairs, which not only added variations in pattern, such as a marbled coat, but a wide mix of genes for robust health.
